The flake-like structure of the graphite molecules in gray iron is what distinguishes the metal. Graphite flakes are where the metal breaks as it fractures, giving the metal its gray surface; this property is the source of the term "gray iron."

During manufacture, the cooling rate and composition may be changed to regulate the size and matrix structure of the graphite flakes. Gray iron has a lower tensile strength and is less ductile than other types of cast iron. On the other hand, it has a higher degree of vibration dampening and superior heat conductivity. Its damping ability is superior to all other cast irons and 20–25 times greater than that of steel.

One of the most popular cast iron products is gray iron due to its wear resistance qualities and ease of machining compared to other types. It is the ideal material for many street applications due to its vibration damping and wear resistant qualities, which is why our hardscape products employ it. Even outside, raw gray iron develops a patina that protects it from damaging corrosion.

Ductile cast ironAlso known as SG iron or spheroidal graphite cast iron, this cast metal has a combination of strength, wear resistance, fatigue resistance, toughness, and ductility.
Ductile iron, or nodular iron, obtains its special properties through the addition of magnesium into the alloy. The inclusion of magnesium facilitates the formation of graphite in a spheroidal configuration, in contrast to the flake structure observed in gray iron. It is crucial to maintain strict control over the composition during the manufacturing process. Even minor impurities, such as sulfur and oxygen, can interact with magnesium, thereby influencing the morphology of the graphite molecules. By adjusting the microcrystalline structure surrounding the graphite spheroids, various grades of ductile iron can be produced. This adjustment can be accomplished either through the casting process or via heat treatment as a subsequent processing step.
Due to its ability to deform upon impact rather than fracturing into pieces, ductile iron is utilized in the production of our cast iron bollards. The impact resistance of ductile iron renders it an ideal material for bollards situated in proximity to vehicular traffic.
